Tips for donating to a charity
It’s that time of year when people are feeling very giving. They have been working and receiving all through the year, now they feel its time to give back.
It is commendable if you want to give to charity; most charities could certainly do with your help. However, as with everything, there is a right and wrong way to give. Here are some tips on donating to charity.
Choose something you are passionate about
What do you consider to be top priority? Is it the environment, animals (or a particular animal), children, elderly people, etc.? For some it might even be a personal event, like the loss of a spouse. This is the best way to start your search for a charity you can make a donation to. Once you have decided on the kind of organization, you can decide whether you want to donate nationally or internationally.
Set up your budget
Before you just randomly start giving, you need to work out a budget to see how much you are able to spend. Some people save during the year so that they are able to give their determined amount. Giving is a personal thing so decide within your own heart how much you are willing to give (according to your budget). If you can’t give money at the moment, there are many other ways in which you can help.
Make sure the charity you choose is legit
It is unfortunate that people would use things like these to scam others, but there are many who do. Make sure you don’t fall into their trap. In some cases the charity may even be legitimate but they are not using the money for their cause. You can find information on charities in South Africa here.
Give more than your money
“Let us not be satisfied with just giving money. Money is not enough, money can be got, but they need your hearts to love them. So, spread your love everywhere you go”- Mother Teresa. Many organizations may need your financial support but they also need your support in other ways. Find out if the charity/ies you want to give to are running any programs where you can volunteer and donate your time. You can also donate things like old toys, books, stationery, clothes, shoes, etc.; during this time of the year, many children would prefer to have someone visit them and pamper them with a gift.
It is more blessed to give than to receive. Keep on giving, for in due time you will reap the rewards!
